Old English Cheese Spread

Straight from New England, this authentic recipe for Old English Cheese Spread is everything it is supposed to be with creamy rich savory flavor and the subtle bite of mustard, horseradish, and Worcestershire. Serve with pretzels, rye crisps, or crackers. Or get creative and use as a condiment in a roast beef sandwich or as a base on crab toast. The possibilities are endless for this classic favorite.

Why this recipe works

This is a beloved classic recipe and totally old school, but it has its cult following for good reason – This stuff is tasty. Sure you can buy the premade Kraft version on Amazon for way too much money, but why bother when this recipe is EASY, cheaper, and so so so much tastier.

I wanted this recipe to match what I was served at one of our favorite restaurants in Ipswitch, Massachusetts, where we would go after a long day of sailing out of Gloucester while I was growing up. This is that recipe. (I recently looked up the restaurant to see if it’s still there and it isn’t. The place there now serves cauliflower pizza, etc. Somewhere, my grandfather is rolling his eyes.)

Anyway, this recipe works because all the ingredients are right at your local store, the flavors balance to be JUST what ye Olde English cheese spread is supposed to be, AND I use reduced fat Velveeta too as bonus. Delicious, versatile, and this recipe takes ridiculously little effort to make.

About the ingredients

There is really nothing remarkable here:

  • Mayonnaise.
  • Milk.
  • Velveeta. I use 2% because the flavor is a bit milder than regular Velveeta, but either makes delicious spread.
  • Whole grain mustard.
  • Paprika.
  • Worcestershire sauce. Fun fact, Worcestershire is basically the same as soy sauce, except Worcestershire is made using anchovies.
  • Garlic powder.
  • Hot sauce. This is a personal choice.
  • Low sodium vegetable juice. Translation: a little can of V8 (the one with reduced salt).
  • Prepared horseradish. This is a lot but trust the process.
  • Green onion. Other options are chives or dried minced onion.

How to make Old English Cheese Spread

My husband and I host a lot of parties, so I am all about easy entertaining with recipes that, while easy to make, are special and make the people I serve feel special that I am serving them such amazing food. That was, never-the-less, fantastically easy to make. This is one of those recipes.

This recipe has 3 steps:

  1. Heat some of the ingredients until the cheese melts and mixture gets smooth.
  2. Add the rest of the ingredients.
  3. Pour into a crock or other serving vessel and refrigerate.

That’s it. REALLY easy stuff with a massive flavor return on investment.

Creative suggestions for serving Old English Cheese

The clear favorites are pretzels or crackers. This is how Old English Cheese was always served to me in restaurants growing up. But this cheese spread is actually super versatile so we can get creative as we want.

  • Spread on toast and top with fresh lump crab. Top with a sprinkle of sharp cheddar cheese and broil until bubbly golden. This can be done with cooked shrimp as well for shrimp toast.
  • Schmere onto a bun and top with roast beef. Better still, use as a condiment in a panini.
  • Instead of refrigerating, use as a Horse-y sauce to drizzle over French Fries.
  • Add to crab cakes.
  • Add to crab stuffing for stuffing shrimp or flounder.
  • Add to sausage stuffing making stuffed mushrooms.
  • Then my simple favorite: Triscuits thin crisps or pretzels and Old English Cheese.
