Grammy Peggy’s Chocolate Chip Cookies

I have no idea where my grandmother got this recipe – could have been off the back of a bag of morsels 60 years ago for all I know. But she made these cookies all the time and so did my mom. I don’t remember a sail with my family where we didn’t have these cookies! Chocolate chip cookie recipes are pretty standard, but there’s just something about this one. I’ve never had better.

Grammy Peggy’s Chocolate Chip Cookies

Dry ingredients:

  • 1 c + 2 T all purpose flour
  • ½ t kosher salt
  • ½ t baking soda

Wet ingredients:

  • ½ c shortening or unsalted butter, softened
  • 6 T sugar
  • 6 T light brown sugar
  • ½ t pure vanilla extract
  • ¼ t water (I never dared ask what the point is of 1/4 t water – I just do it)
  • 1 egg
  • Additional ingredients: ½ c chopped walnuts and 1 bag semi-sweet chocolate morsels

Preheat oven to 375F.

Combine the dry ingredients in a medium bowl. Separately, in a large bowl, combine the wet ingredients. Add the dry ingredients to the wet and mix just until combined (don’t over mix or they won’t come out flaky). Add the nuts and morsels and stir in with a big wooden spoon.

Using 2 spoons or a cookie scoop, scoop out ~1½-in mounds onto a large baking sheet. Bake at 375F for 8-10 minutes until just barely browned around the edges. I find I have to go a little longer in my oven – like 12min – so just watch them. When ready, take them out of the oven and let them cool 2 minutes, then gently transfer them to a cooking rack so they can cool completely. Enjoy!

*Christmas Variation*

Make the dough as described above; however, use only half a bag of semi-sweet morsels. Also, add a bag of Christmas colored (red and green) mini M&Ms and omit the nuts.
